The story

Khawa Dune Challenge and Cultural Festival in Khawa

Khawa Dune Challenge and Cultural Festival combines off-road motorsport, quad and bike racing across the Kgalagadi desert dunes with craft markets, traditional dance and food stalls in the small village of Khawa, deep in Botswana's southwestern Kalahari. Hosted by the Botswana Tourism Organisation alongside government and motorsport partners, it has grown into a flagship weekend on the country's tourism calendar, launching a youth racing academy alongside the main competitions.

Khawa is a small settlement roughly 167 kilometers southwest of Tsabong, deep in the Kgalagadi District where Botswana's portion of the Kalahari Desert rises into red dune country, and for one weekend each year it becomes the improbable center of the country's off-road motorsport calendar.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Khawa Dune Challenge is one of the few events anywhere that pairs serious competitive off-road motorsport, 4x4 dune racing, quad and bike competitions and a dedicated youth racing academy, with a genuine cultural festival of craft markets, food and traditional performance, staged in one of the more remote corners of the Kalahari

02

The mystery stays covered

Its location in the Kgalagadi's red dune country gives the racing a visually dramatic desert backdrop rarely matched by other Southern African motorsport events, and its role in bringing tourism and youth development to a small, otherwise overlooked desert village gives it a community purpose beyond spectacle
