Makgadikgadi Epic in Makgadikgadi Pans
Makgadikgadi Epic is a multi-day off-road cycling stage race across the Makgadikgadi Pans, one of the largest salt pan systems on earth, in central Botswana. Riders cover long, exposed stretches of hard-packed pan and surrounding scrubland over several days of self-supported or lightly supported stages, camping between legs in a landscape with almost no shade, shelter or fixed infrastructure.
The Makgadikgadi Pans cover thousands of square kilometres of what was once a vast inland lake, leaving behind a landscape of blinding white salt flats, scattered baobabs and seasonal grassland that floods briefly after summer rains and dries into a cracked, mirage-prone surface for most of the year.
