The story

Makgadikgadi Epic in Makgadikgadi Pans

Makgadikgadi Epic is a multi-day off-road cycling stage race across the Makgadikgadi Pans, one of the largest salt pan systems on earth, in central Botswana. Riders cover long, exposed stretches of hard-packed pan and surrounding scrubland over several days of self-supported or lightly supported stages, camping between legs in a landscape with almost no shade, shelter or fixed infrastructure.

The Makgadikgadi Pans cover thousands of square kilometres of what was once a vast inland lake, leaving behind a landscape of blinding white salt flats, scattered baobabs and seasonal grassland that floods briefly after summer rains and dries into a cracked, mirage-prone surface for most of the year.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Racing across the Makgadikgadi Pans puts riders on one of the most visually extreme cycling surfaces anywhere: a flat, cracked, blindingly white salt expanse with almost no shade or shelter for tens of kilometres at a stretch, unlike any conventional off-road cycling terrain

02

The mystery stays covered

The multi-day, camp-to-camp format forces a self-sufficient rhythm that is closer to an expedition than a typical stage race, with heat, glare and total exposure shaping strategy as much as physical fitness

03

The city starts moving

It also puts riders directly inside one of the world's largest salt pan systems, a landscape more commonly seen from a 4x4 or quad-bike tour than experienced at cycling pace and effort

Tradition 5

Living ritual

and a strong culture of riders looking out for each other given the terrain's total lack of services
