Arraial do Pavulagem in Belém
Arraial do Pavulagem is a grassroots street parade that has moved through Belem each June since 1987, mixing Amazonian boi-bumba characters, marujada sailors and Curupira folklore with acoustic carimbo and brega music. Unlike televised boi-bumba spectacles elsewhere in the region, it is a walking, community-organized block that treats June tradition as living street culture rather than a staged show, drawing locals who follow the band through the city's older neighborhoods.
Belem built its own answer to festa junina in 1987, when a small children's carnival project grew into the Arraial do Pavulagem, a street parade that now moves through the city's older neighborhoods over several June weekends.
