The story

Cherry Blossom Festival Garca in Garca

Garça's Festa da Cerejeira celebrates the bloom of roughly 660 cherry trees, mostly of the Okinawa variety, planted around the town's Lagoa J.K. Williams by its Japanese-Brazilian community. Held over several days in late June into July when the trees actually flower, the festival adds taiko drumming, folk dance, cosplay contests and Japanese food to the lakeside blossom display, and was added to Brazil's official national events calendar in 2024.

Garça holds one of São Paulo state's largest cherry blossom groves, and the town's Festa da Cerejeira turns its bloom into a multi-day celebration of Japanese-Brazilian heritage.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

This is one of relatively few places in Brazil where the trees themselves, not a marketing name, are genuinely cherry blossoms rather than a similarly colored native species, and the roughly 660-tree grove around an artificial lake makes for a real seasonal spectacle rather than a token planting

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's inclusion in Brazil's official national events calendar via federal law in 2024 is an unusually formal recognition for a town-level cultural event, reflecting both the scale it has reached, over 150,000 visitors in recent years, and the depth of Garça's Japanese-Brazilian community identity

03

The city starts moving

The lakeside setting lets visitors experience the blossoms informally by day and the staged cultural program in the evening
