The story

Bansko Jazz Festival in Bansko

An open-air jazz festival held each summer on Bansko's central square, running since 1998 and now the oldest event of its kind in Bulgaria. Past lineups have included Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Diana Krall, performing largely free to a mountain-town crowd more used to ski season than international headliners. The roughly ten-day run fills the square nightly with concerts that often stretch past midnight.

Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Diana Krall have all played the open-air stage on Bansko's central Nikola Vaptsarov Square, a booking record unusual for a mountain town whose main season is winter skiing.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's defining feature is its venue: performances happen in the open public square of a working mountain town rather than a fenced festival ground, so there is no separate gate, camping area or festival economy to navigate

02

The mystery stays covered

Its longevity, dating to 1998, has let it attract headline jazz names rarely booked outside major European capitals, a reputation unusual for a town of Bansko's size

03

The city starts moving

Because most concerts are free and open-air, the crowd mixes serious jazz listeners with locals and tourists simply out for the evening, and the surrounding restaurants and bars extend the atmosphere well past the final set
