In Bulgari village, deep in the Strandzha mountains, a small group of dancers walk on burning coals while holding icons of Saints Constantine and Helena, part of a ritual UNESCO recognized as intangible cultural heritage in 2009. The two-day panagyr opens with a morning procession to a holy spring and closes after dark with the ember dance, accompanied throughout by gaida bagpipes and drums. It survives nowhere else in Bulgaria in its original village form.
