July Morning Kamen Bryag in Kamen Bryag
On the night before July 1st, Bulgarians converge informally on the Black Sea cliffs at Kamen Bryag to greet sunrise together, a custom rooted in the 1980s underground popularity of Uriah Heep's song July Morning. There is no ticket, stage or fixed program; people camp, light fires and play music through the night on the clifftop until dawn, closer to a mass informal gathering than a produced festival.
Ex-Uriah Heep singer John Lawton's ashes were scattered near the Eternal Flame monument at Kamen Bryag in 2022, a burial site chosen because he had performed the British band's own song there on the same clifftop nearly every July first from 2006 to 2015.
