The story

Rose Festival Kazanlak in Kazanlak

A long-running rose-harvest celebration in Bulgaria's Valley of Roses, where visitors can watch or join hand-picking of Rosa damascena blooms in villages around Kazanlak before the town hosts a parade, a Rose Queen coronation and open-air folk concerts. Dating to 1903, it runs across the peak bloom weeks of late May and early June and doubles as a window into the region's centuries-old rose-oil distilling industry.

Villagers in Yasenovo, Rozovo, Kanchevo and other settlements around Kazanlak still pick Rosa damascena blooms by hand between five and ten in the morning, when the petals hold the most fragrant oil and the dew has not yet burned off.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The rose-picking ritual is the festival's most distinctive element: visitors travel out to villages such as Yasenovo or Rozovo before sunrise to watch pickers strip petals by hand while the oil content is highest, a practice unchanged by the industrial scale of the modern attar trade

02

The mystery stays covered

The Rose Queen tradition, running since the 1960s, adds a pageant element absent from most harvest festivals, with a public coronation and costumed procession through Kazanlak

03

The city starts moving

Because the event spans roughly two weeks rather than a single day, visitors can time a visit to a specific village ritual, a distillery visit or the central parade independently
