Every five years, Koprivshtitsa hosts a curated national cross-section of Bulgarian folklore, with singers, dancers and craftspeople selected through regional qualifying rounds performing simultaneously across open-air stages set into the historic town's meadows. First held in 1965 with 4,000 participants, it grew to 18,000 by its 2010 edition, and UNESCO has recognized the festival's own multi-tier selection system as a form of intangible cultural heritage.

Eighteen thousand performers took part in the 2010 edition of Koprivshtitsa's folklore festival, a scale that took nine editions across nearly half a century to build from the 4,000 participants who opened the very first gathering on August 12, 1965.
