The story

Pirin Sings Folklore Festival in Predel/Razlog

Pirin Sings gathers performers of southwestern Bulgaria's regional folklore on the mountain-pass meadows at Predel, between the Pirin and Rila ranges near Razlog. Founded in 1962 by musicologist Ilia Manolov and shut down under state policy in 1985, it was revived in 1997 and now runs on a more frequent cycle, with singing, instrumental music, dance and regional costume built specifically around Pirin, not a national folklore sample.

Musicologist Ilia Manolov gathered about 3,000 performers, mostly singers from the Pirin Macedonia region, on the meadows at Predel in 1962, in what became the founding edition of the sabor now known as Pirin Sings.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Pirin Sings has a harder political history than most Bulgarian folk festivals: closed by the state in 1985 after running roughly every five years since its 1962 founding, it needed a twelve-year gap and a local revival in 1997 before continuing

02

The mystery stays covered

Its focus stays tightly regional

03

The city starts moving

the repertoire draws on Pirin and historically Pirin Macedonia folklore specifically, rather than sampling traditions nationwide, distinguishing it from broader national showcases

04

The water draws everyone in

The venue itself, open meadowland at the Predel mountain pass between the Pirin and Rila ranges, places the festival in alpine scenery uncommon among Bulgaria's largely lowland or town-based folk gatherings

What moves first

Living ritual

The program includes staged reconstructions of Pirin-region seasonal customs and rituals alongside straight musical performance

Water and renewal

Living ritual

a format retained from the festival's earliest editions when it functioned partly as a documentation project for vocal traditions specific to the historically border and Macedonia-linked Pirin area
