The story

Antistatic Festival for Contemporary Dance and Performance in Sofia

Founded in 2008 by three performers to give contemporary dance a dedicated stage in Bulgaria, Antistatic runs every spring in Sofia, often using the converted industrial venue Toplocentrala. Since 2018 it has included the Bulgarian Dance Platform, a biennial showcase of Bulgaria-based choreographers set inside the wider international program, plus artist talks and post-show discussions.

Antistatic began in 2008 when three performers, Iva Sveshtarova, Willy Prager and Stephan Shtereff, built a Sofia platform specifically for contemporary dance and performance art, genres that had little dedicated stage time in Bulgaria at the time.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Its defining feature is genre specificity: contemporary dance and performance art, rather than a general performing-arts mix, in a country where the form previously had little dedicated stage time

02

The mystery stays covered

Since 2018 it has run the Bulgarian Dance Platform biennial alongside the international program, giving a curated spotlight to Bulgaria-based choreographers rather than treating local work as an afterthought

03

The city starts moving

Performances frequently use Toplocentrala, a former thermal power station converted into a contemporary art venue, whose raw industrial interior suits experimental, space-responsive choreography better than a conventional theatre stage
