Golden Dolphin International Puppet Festival in Varna
Launched in October 1972 as the First International Festival of the Bulgarian Puppet Play, the Golden Dolphin runs once every three years in Varna rather than annually, gathering touring puppet companies from Bulgaria and abroad. Competition entries are judged by both an international jury of puppet-theatre specialists and, in recent editions, a jury of children. Winning productions receive the festival's Golden Dolphin statuette.
Varna's puppet theatre started running national showcases of Bulgarian puppet drama in 1969, and the format grew quickly enough that by October 1972 the city launched a fully international edition, the First International Festival of the Bulgarian Puppet Play, under the name it still carries today, the Golden Dolphin.
