Prof. Georgi Dimitrov International May Choir Competition in Varna
The International May Choir Competition, named for composer Georgi Dimitrov since 1982, was founded in Varna in 1975 by conductor Marin Chonev. Since 1989 it has been part of the European Grand Prix for Choral Singing circuit, alongside sister competitions in Arezzo, Debrecen, Tours, Maribor, and Tolosa, placing it among the continent's most prestigious choral events. It runs every May with choirs judged by an international jury.
Choral conductor Marin Chonev established the International May Choir Competition in Varna in 1975 with backing from the municipality, and in 1982 the event was renamed for composer Georgi Dimitrov, founder of Bulgaria's modern choral school, giving it the fuller title it still carries.
