Varna Summer International Music Festival in Varna
Founded in 1926, Varna Summer International Music Festival is Bulgaria's oldest classical music event, staged across a season running from late June into October. Organized by the Varna Philharmonic, it splits into modules covering symphony and chamber concerts, early music, opera and ballet crossover, and youth education, with venues ranging from the Festival and Congress Centre to Roman ruins and city churches. It has belonged to the European Festivals Association since 1987.
Varna's first music festival began in 1926, only a year after the town's Sea Baths complex opened as Bulgaria's first seaside spa, when composers Pancho Vladigerov and Dobri Hristov helped organize a run of concerts that eventually became the Varna Summer International Music Festival.
