Stage of the Ages in Veliko Tarnovo

Stage of the Ages stages full opera and ballet productions inside the ruins of Tsarevets Fortress in Veliko Tarnovo, using the excavated medieval palace as a set rather than building one. First performed in 1985, revived in 2008, and reorganized in 2016 as a joint summer season for Bulgaria's opera houses, it draws touring companies from across the country. Performances run outdoors through summer, weather permitting, with the fortress silhouette lit against the night sky.

In 1985 the opera Ivaylo, composed by Marin Goleminov, was staged among the excavated foundations of the medieval tsars' palace on Tsarevets hill to mark eight centuries since the uprising that founded the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in Veliko Tarnovo.
