The story

Zheravna Festival of the National Costume in Zheravna

Zheravna's festival enforces a strict rule found nowhere else in Bulgaria's folk calendar: only visitors wearing a traditional national costume, or nosia, may enter, with smartphones, cameras and plastic goods banned outright. Founded in 2008 by choreographer Hristo Dimitrov after noticing the effect traditional dress had at his own wedding, the three-day event turns the well-preserved 17th-century village of Zheravna into a full immersive recreation of pre-industrial Bulgarian dress culture.

Entry to Zheravna's festival requires a Bulgarian national costume, a nosia, and nothing more modern than that; smartphones, cameras and plastic bottles are turned away at the gate, a rule the festival has enforced since choreographer Hristo Dimitrov founded it in 2008.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The defining feature is enforcement, not costume itself: unlike folk festivals where regional dress appears on a stage for spectators, Zheravna requires every attendee to wear a nosia to enter at all, and visibly modern objects, phones, cameras, plastic bottles, contemporary clothing, are banned from festival grounds

02

The mystery stays covered

The founder, Hristo Dimitrov, built the concept directly from a personal observation at his own wedding rather than from an existing festival model, making Zheravna's format a deliberate invention rather than a revived historical custom

03

The city starts moving

The venue reinforces the effect: Zheravna has been an architectural and craft center since the 17th century and is now a protected museum-reserve village of wooden Revival-era houses, so the built environment already looks pre-modern before costumes are added
