Gishora Sacred Drum Performances in Gishora/Gitega
Gishora is the hillside sanctuary near Gitega where Burundi's sacred royal drums, Ruciteme and Murimirwa, have been kept since the early nineteenth century by the Batimbo ritualists of the Banyagisaka lineage. The drummers perform regularly, especially on weekends, for visitors who travel out to the site, and the tradition is inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Confirm current performance days locally, since scheduling is community-run rather than centrally ticketed or advertised.
Gishora is a hillside sanctuary outside Gitega that has kept two of Burundi's most sacred royal drums, Ruciteme and Murimirwa, since a royal residence was founded there by King Ntare Rugamba in the first half of the nineteenth century.
