Festival da Gamboa in Praia
Originating from a single 1990 anniversary concert by the band Os Tubarões at Praia da Gamboa beach, which drew seven thousand attendees, this festival was formally established within Praia's municipal May festivities in 1993 and grew to roughly twenty thousand annual spectators by 1997, with RTP-Africa broadcasting it archipelago-wide and abroad from 1998. By its seventh edition in 1999 it ranked among Cabo Verde's principal cultural events, a standing it has broadly maintained ever since.
The Festival da Gamboa traces its origin to a single anniversary concert in February 1990, when the Cape Verdean band Os Tubarões marked its own twenty-first year as a group with an event at Praia da Gamboa beach in the capital that drew a striking seven thousand attendees for what was, at the time, a one-off celebration rather than a planned annual festival.
