Originating from a single 1990 anniversary concert by the band Os Tubarões at Praia da Gamboa beach, which drew seven thousand attendees, this festival was formally established within Praia's municipal May festivities in 1993 and grew to roughly twenty thousand annual spectators by 1997, with RTP-Africa broadcasting it archipelago-wide and abroad from 1998.
