Festival Santa Maria in Santa Maria
Growing out of Sal island's municipal festivities, which originally combined religious and sporting observance, the Festival de Santa Maria held its first dedicated music edition in 1990 and grew substantially after Portuguese broadcaster RTP-Africa began televising it live in the late 1990s. Held each September around the municipality's own founding date, the festival has evolved across more than three decades of editions into a world-class beachside music event tracking Sal's own transformation into a major tourism destination.
The Festival de Santa Maria grew out of the annual municipal festivities of Sal island, celebrations that originally combined religious observance and sporting activities before the music-focused festival now associated with the name held its first edition in 1990.
