Nguon Festival in Foumban

The Nguon is the biennial festival of Cameroon's Bamoun kingdom in Foumban, tracing its origins to 1394. Its centrepiece, the King's Judgement, sees the reigning Sultan symbolically deposed and made to account for his governance before being reinstated, one of the few living royal-accountability rituals of its kind still performed in Africa today.

The Nguon Festival marks its origins to 1394, when Nchare Yen, founder of the Bamoun kingdom, established a practice of touring the realm to check on food supplies and hear grievances directly from his people, a tradition that evolved over more than six centuries into the structured week-long festival held today in Foumban.
