Festival Nyem-Nyem in Ngaoundere
Festival Nyem-Nyem is a July commemoration re-enacting the Nyem-Nyem people's early-twentieth-century armed resistance against German colonial forces, including their victory at the Battle of the Pangar River. War dances, oral storytelling and displays of traditional weaponry and attire keep that specific military history alive for new generations rather than functioning as a general music or arts festival.
Festival Nyem-Nyem exists to keep alive a specific military memory: the early-twentieth-century revolt in which Nyem-Nyem warriors of the Adamawa plateau fought German colonial forces to a standstill, a resistance whose best-known victory came at the Battle of the Pangar River.
