The story

Stan Rogers Folk Festival in Canso

Stanfest is a folk and songwriter festival held each late July in Canso, a remote fishing community on Nova Scotia's eastern coast, named for the late Canadian singer-songwriter Stan Rogers. Running since 1997, it fills three stages with East Coast and international folk talent while most attendees camp on site for the full weekend, turning the isolated grounds into a temporary music town far from any city.

Stanfest takes its name from Stan Rogers, the Canadian singer-songwriter whose sea-facing ballads about Maritime life made him one of the country's most influential folk voices before his death in a 1983 aircraft fire.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes Stanfest from other Canadian folk festivals is its location: rather than staging in a city park, it commits fully to Canso's remoteness, three and a half hours from Halifax, which filters the crowd toward people willing to travel for the music itself

02

The mystery stays covered

Naming the festival after Stan Rogers gives the programming a songwriting backbone, favoring lyric-driven performers over pure spectacle

03

The city starts moving

The campground jam sessions that continue after official sets end are treated as part of the program rather than an afterthought, and the Handmade Village keeps regional craft traditions visible alongside the music
