National Indigenous Peoples Day in Multiple cities
National Indigenous Peoples Day falls every June 21, the summer solstice, and recognizes First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples with events held independently in cities and communities nationwide. There is no single venue or organizer: Ottawa, Winnipeg, Vancouver and dozens of smaller towns run their own powwows, round dances, craft markets and storytelling circles. Visitors should treat each gathering as a community event to join respectfully, not a spectator show.
Communities across Canada mark June 21 as National Indigenous Peoples Day, a date fixed to the summer solstice and chosen in 1996 when the day was formally proclaimed by the Governor General after decades of advocacy from First Nations, Inuit and Metis organizations.
