Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake

The Shaw Festival began in 1962 when Brian Doherty staged two George Bernard Shaw plays in Niagara-on-the-Lake's old Court House, building around a mandate limited to Shaw and his contemporaries writing between 1856 and 1950. Now running three theatres across an April-to-December season, considerably longer than most festivals, the company mixes Shaw-era work with contemporary plays exploring similar themes, set in a wine-country town at the mouth of the Niagara River.

The Shaw Festival began in 1962 when Niagara-on-the-Lake lawyer Brian Doherty organized eight performances of two George Bernard Shaw plays, Don Juan in Hell and Candida, staged in the town's old Court House as a modest summer project rather than an intended institution.
