The story

Canadian Tulip Festival in Ottawa

Ottawa's Commissioners Park and the shoreline of Dow's Lake fill with more than a million tulips each May, the living legacy of a wartime gift from the Dutch royal family after Princess Juliana sheltered in Canada during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. Started as a public festival in 1953 by photojournalist Malak Karsh, it now runs eleven days with a self-guided Tulip Trail linking the main flower displays around the city.

Ottawa's tulip festival traces back to a specific wartime debt: when Nazi Germany occupied the Netherlands, Crown Princess Juliana and her daughters took refuge in Ottawa, and in 1943 she gave birth to Princess Margriet at the Civic Hospital, in a delivery room the Canadian government briefly declared extraterritorial so the newborn princess would hold Dutch nationality alone, keeping her place in the line of succession intact.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's core material is scale: rather than tidy flower beds, Ottawa plants sweeping colour bands of more than 100 tulip varieties along Dow's Lake and through Commissioners Park, turning a walk into a slow-moving wash of red, yellow and pink

02

The mystery stays covered

Its origin story gives the blooms extra weight, since the annual bulb gift began as Dutch gratitude for Canada's wartime hospitality toward the exiled royal family and the Canadian military's role in liberating the Netherlands

03

The city starts moving

A self-guided Tulip Trail links displays across the city, and some visitors formally adopt a tulip bed in memory of someone, folding personal meaning into the public display
