The story

Festival del Huaso de Olmue in Olmue

Held every January since 1970 at the El Patagual amphitheater in Olmue, Valparaiso region, the Festival del Huaso de Olmue is a competitive folk-music event centered on cueca, Chile's national dance, and tonada song, rooted in huaso rural culture. Winners receive the prestigious Guitarpin de Oro trophy, awarded since 1974, and the festival has been broadcast on national television since 1979, giving it outsized visibility for a small town.

The Festival del Huaso de Olmue began in January 1970 as an idea from journalist and writer Carlos Guzman, then also working as Olmue's municipal tourism officer, and has run every year since at the same open-air venue, the El Patagual amphitheater, in the small town of Olmue in Chile's Valparaiso region.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Chilean festivals combine this much continuous history with a single fixed venue: the same El Patagual amphitheater has hosted every edition since 1970, and the Guitarpin de Oro trophy, awarded since 1974, remains one of Chilean folk music's most prestigious honors

02

The mystery stays covered

National television broadcast since 1979 turned a small-town musical competition into an annual fixture of Chilean cultural life, watched well beyond Olmue itself

03

The city starts moving

Competitive cueca, performed live with stomping footwork, handkerchief choreography and audible crowd reaction, is the festival's central draw, though newer categories such as urban cueca show the tradition adapting rather than staying frozen in its 1970 format
