The story

Maraton de Santiago in Santiago

Chile's largest sporting event by participation, the Maraton de Santiago starts and finishes at the Palacio de La Moneda each April, running through Santiago Centro, Nunoa, Providencia, Las Condes and Vitacura. Formally established in its current form in 2008 with Adidas as title sponsor, it now draws more than thirty thousand runners across the marathon, half-marathon and shorter distances.

Chile's first documented marathon took place on May 2, 1909, when a group of athletes gathered at the Hipodromo de Chile to race for a prize watch, won by the Spanish-born runner Antonio Creuz in just over three hours.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The race's history stretches back further than most Chilean sporting events, to a 1909 race at the Hipodromo de Chile won for a prize watch, giving the modern marathon a documented lineage spanning more than a century even though the current branded event dates only to 2008

02

The mystery stays covered

Its scale, more than thirty thousand participants, makes it larger than any other single sporting event in Chile regardless of discipline, and its course through five comunas gives runners a cross-section of the capital from colonial downtown streets to modern eastern neighborhoods
