Maraton de Santiago in Santiago
Chile's largest sporting event by participation, the Maraton de Santiago starts and finishes at the Palacio de La Moneda each April, running through Santiago Centro, Nunoa, Providencia, Las Condes and Vitacura. Formally established in its current form in 2008 with Adidas as title sponsor, it now draws more than thirty thousand runners across the marathon, half-marathon and shorter distances.
Chile's first documented marathon took place on May 2, 1909, when a group of athletes gathered at the Hipodromo de Chile to race for a prize watch, won by the Spanish-born runner Antonio Creuz in just over three hours.
