Dehong Water Splashing Festival in Dehong
The Dai ethnic New Year festival across Dehong prefecture, Yunnan, held over three or four days in mid-April according to the Dai lunar calendar. It opens with the Festival for Bathing the Buddha, a purification ritual, before moving into the public water-splashing for which it is known, staged in parallel host cities Mangshi and Ruili, with Mangshi's central square drawing crowds exceeding 80,000 including participants from across the nearby Myanmar border.
The Water-Splashing Festival marks the Dai New Year across Dehong prefecture in western Yunnan, timed to the sixth month of the Dai lunar calendar and usually falling in mid-April over three or four days.
