Harbin Summer Music Concert in Harbin

First formally staged in 1961 and now held every other year, the Harbin Summer Music Concert is one of China's three major recurring music festivals, alongside events in Shanghai and Guangzhou. Co-organised with the national Ministry of Culture since 1996, it contributed to Harbin's 2010 UNESCO City of Music recognition.

Harbin's ice festivals define its winter identity, but the city's most historically significant public arts event actually happens in August: the Harbin Summer Music Concert, first staged as a formal concert on August 5, 1961, at the Harbin Youth Palace, growing out of a broader Harbin Summer Music Month initiative from 1958.
