Zhuang Sanyuesan Festival in Nanning/Guangxi
Sanyuesan is the Zhuang people's own spring folk holiday, held on the third day of the third lunar month and recognized as a two-day regional holiday across Guangxi since 2014. Antiphonal courtship singing at open-air song fairs, five-colored glutinous rice, bamboo pole dancing, and embroidered-ball tossing games mark the day across cities and villages, distinguishing it from staged festival productions built on the same singing tradition.
On the third day of the third lunar month, fields and hillsides across Guangxi fill with song, a custom that traces back through the Sui and Tang dynasties to older Shangsi Festival spring rites recorded even earlier.
