Qinghai Lake International Cycling Festival in Qinghai Lake/Xining
Held around Qinghai Lake since 2002 and rebranded in 2025 as the Tour of Magnificent Qinghai, this professional road cycling stage race averages roughly 3,000 meters of elevation, reaching 3,800 meters at points, earning it the nickname Race in the Sky. Now an International Cycling Union ProSeries event, it covers about 1,400 kilometers of high-altitude plateau scenery around China's largest saline lake.
Riders call it the Race in the Sky for good reason: the route around Qinghai Lake averages roughly 3,000 meters of elevation and climbs as high as 3,800 meters at points, altitudes that would count as extreme for a single mountain stage in most cycling races and here define the entire course.
