Aranya Theater Festival in Qinhuangdao/Aranya

Founded in 2021 by playwright Meng Jinghui at the purpose-built Aranya seaside resort near Qinhuangdao, this June festival stages drama, dance, music, and literature-based performances across beachfront and public spaces, with over half of some editions' shows held outdoors. Artistic directors Meng Jinghui, Zhang Ziyi, and Chen Minghao have built it into a venue for both Chinese and international theater against a distinctly contemporary coastal backdrop.

Playwright and director Meng Jinghui founded this festival in 2021 at Aranya, a purpose-built seaside resort community east of Beijing near Qinhuangdao, choosing a coastal development rather than an established theater district as the setting for what has become one of China's first festivals built specifically around coastal, partly outdoor staging.
