Quanzhou Maritime Silk Road Festival in Quanzhou
Initiated in 2014 and jointly organized by China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism with Fujian Province, this festival celebrates Quanzhou's documented history as a major Maritime Silk Road trading hub, formalized by the city's 2021 UNESCO World Heritage listing. Recent editions have drawn over 1,600 artists and 52 troupes from more than 40 countries, pairing international performance programming with the city's surviving heritage sites.
Quanzhou's inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021 as the Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China formalized what this festival has celebrated since its initiation in 2014: the city's documented role as a major hub of the historic Maritime Silk Road trade network between the tenth and fourteenth centuries.
