Taishan International Mountaineering Festival in Tai'an
Tai'an's mountaineering festival, running every September since 1987, turns Mount Tai's historic pilgrimage stairway into a graded competitive climb across three age-based courses, from a 591-step seniors' route to a 6,566-step youth ascent, all following the same stone steps emperors once climbed for state sacrifices.
Mount Tai's central pilgrimage route climbs more than 6,600 stone steps through the Eighteen Bends, the mountain's steepest stretch, before reaching the South Gate to Heaven, and this September festival turns that same historic route into a competitive climb rather than only a devotional one.
