Wuhan's East Lake Cherry Blossom Festival centres on Moshan Cherry Blossom Garden, established in 1978 and expanded with ten thousand trees through a 1998 China-Japan joint planting, now holding more than thirty varieties across the East Lake Ecological Tourism Scenic Area, distinct from the separate, unmanaged cherry viewing that draws crowds each spring to Wuhan University's campus.

Former Japanese prime minister Tanaka Kakuei's gift of cherry trees to Chinese stateswoman Deng Yingchao eventually found a home at Wuhan's East Lake, where the Moshan Cherry Blossom Garden, established in 1978, grew into one of only two parks in China widely recognised as among its most famous cherry blossom sites, the other being Longwangtang Park in Dalian.
