One city, two rivers, three towns, four bridges and five lakes is how organisers describe the Wuhan Marathon's course, a route built specifically to showcase the geography that makes Wuhan unusual among Chinese cities: a metropolis split by the Yangtze and Han rivers into three historically distinct towns, now stitched together by multiple bridges including the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, whose 1957 opening as the river's first fixed crossing ended decades of railway cars being ferried across the water on barges between the Beijing-Wuhan and Wuhan-Guangzhou lines.
