Wuyuan Shaiqiu Autumn Festival in Wuyuan/Huangling

In the hillside Huizhou village of Huangling, Wuyuan County, the Shaiqiu Cultural Festival, inaugurated in 2015, celebrates the still-functional autumn practice of drying corn, chilli, pumpkin and chrysanthemum on rooftop bamboo racks, inviting visitors to join villagers in the display rather than only photograph it from a distance.

Huizhou-style houses climbing the hillside village of Huangling in Wuyuan County display corn, chilli peppers, pumpkin and chrysanthemum flowers spread across bamboo drying racks on their rooftops each autumn, a genuinely functional harvest-storage practice called shaiqiu, or sun-drying, that this festival, inaugurated in 2015, has turned into a scheduled cultural celebration without changing the underlying agricultural purpose.
