Yueyang International Dragon Boat Festival in Yueyang/Dongting Lake
Staged on the Miluo River and Dongting Lake near Yueyang, the waters where tradition holds Qu Yuan drowned in 278 BC and where villagers first raced out by boat to try to save him, this dragon boat festival ties its races directly to the story credited as dragon boat racing's origin, alongside the customary tossing of zongzi into the river.
Local tradition holds that dragon boat racing itself began on the water bordering Yueyang, where the poet and statesman Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Miluo River in 278 BC after the fall of his homeland, the state of Chu, and villagers rowed out in a failed attempt to save him before searching all the way into nearby Dongting Lake for his body.
