The story

Yushu Horse Racing Festival in Yushu

Held each year from around July 25th to August 1st on the high grassland of Yushu, Qinghai, this Tibetan festival gathers thousands of tents into a temporary nomad city for horseback archery, hada-scarf snatching at a gallop, dressage-like horse-dancing, and song and dance performed in traditional Tibetan costume.

A temporary city of thousands of tents rising on the grassland is the first sight that meets visitors to the Yushu Horse Racing Festival, staged annually from around July 25th to August 1st in Yushu, also known by its Tibetan name Jyekundo, a Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Qinghai province often described as the largest Tibetan nomad gathering the province hosts.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The 'four spectacles' framing, tent city, traditional costume, song and dance, and horseback archery, gives the festival a locally recognized structure distinct from a generic race meeting

02

The mystery stays covered

Displays such as snatching hada scarves from the ground at a gallop and horse-dancing routines resembling dressage are specific mounted skills not found at most regional horse festivals

03

The city starts moving

Rooted in the nomadic Tibetan plateau lifestyle where these riding skills were once matters of survival, the festival ties its sporting content directly to that historical necessity rather than staging it as invented spectacle
