The story

Rock al Parque in Bogota

Launched in 1995 out of youth music meetings held at Bogota's planetarium, Rock al Parque is a free, city-government-funded rock festival now staged over three days each year at Parque Simon Bolivar, gathering more than fifty bands across metal, ska, reggae and punk for crowds that have reached 400,000 spectators.

A planetarium hosting youth music meetings in 1992 grew, within three years, into what is now billed as the largest free rock festival in Latin America: Rock al Parque, first staged in Bogota from May 26th to 29th, 1995, organized by Mario Duarte, Julio Correal and Bertha Quintero under the sponsorship of the city government.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Financed entirely by Bogota's public arts institute, Instituto Distrital de las Artes, rather than commercial sponsorship, Rock al Parque has kept every edition free to attend across three decades, a funding model distinct from nearly every comparably sized rock festival elsewhere in the world

02

The mystery stays covered

Cumulative attendance surpassing seven million people and more than a thousand bands hosted across its history give it a scale among Latin America's largest music festivals of any genre

03

The city starts moving

Its origin in youth music meetings held at Bogota's planetarium in 1992 ties the festival's roots to a specific civic cultural-policy initiative rather than a commercial promoter's idea
