The story

Petronio Alvarez Pacific Music Festival in Cali

Petronio Alvarez Pacific Music Festival is Latin America's largest showcase of Afro-Colombian Pacific coast music, held each August at Cali's Unidad Deportiva Alberto Galindo sports complex since its founding in 1997. Marimba de chonta ensembles, chirimia brass groups and currulao singers from river communities across Choco, Valle del Cauca, Cauca and Narino perform alongside Pacific coast food stalls.

Petronio Alvarez Pacific Music Festival takes its name from a rail worker and composer from Buenaventura whose 1954 song, roughly translated as 'My Buenaventura,' became something like an anthem for Colombia's Pacific coast.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The signature feature is the marimba de chonta, a wooden xylophone built from palm wood that anchors currulao music and gives the festival a sonic identity no other major Colombian festival shares

02

The mystery stays covered

Unlike folk showcases built around a single headline genre, Petronio Alvarez brings together marimba ensembles, chirimia brass groups and river-community vocal traditions from four different Pacific-coast departments under one roof

03

The city starts moving

The festival is also named for a specific historical composer, rail worker Petronio Alvarez Quintero, whose 1954 song 'Mi Buenaventura' is treated locally as a founding text for the region's musical identity rather than a generic tribute
