Pirarucu Festival in Leticia

Founded in 1987 by Nury Campos de Bastidas as a competition for autochthonous Amazonian rhythms, Leticia's festival grew into the Festival Internacional de Musica Popular Amazonense, popularly known as the Pirarucu de Oro after the region's prized fish. Held each October, November or December, it showcases Amazonian popular music and draws audiences from across the Colombia-Brazil-Peru border area, and has been declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation.

Leticia's Pirarucu de Oro festival began in 1987 under the direction of Nury Campos de Bastidas, then head of cultural extension for the Amazonas department capital, launching initially as the Concurso de Ritmos Autoctonos del Amazonas, a competition focused narrowly on autochthonous Amazonian rhythms.
