The story

Medellin Marathon in Medellín

Colombia's oldest marathon, run every September through Medellin's hillside comunas and river corridor before finishing inside the sand-and-pool Parque de los Pies Descalzos. Distances range from 5 kilometres to the full 42.195-kilometre marathon, only added in 2012 after the race began in 1995 as a shorter run. It holds World Athletics certification and Boston Marathon qualifier status, drawing competitive and recreational international entrants.

Runners finish Medellin's marathon inside Parque de los Pies Descalzos, a public park built with sand and shallow pools where the closing meters swap asphalt for grass underfoot.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few marathon finish lines are literal parks built from sand and shallow pools rather than a stadium or plaza, and Parque de los Pies Descalzos gives Medellin's race a distinctive, barefoot-friendly close

02

The mystery stays covered

The course itself is unusual for a certified marathon: instead of flat downtown loops, it climbs through hillside comunas transformed over the past two decades by cable cars and library-parks, giving runners views over the Aburra Valley that most road marathons cannot match

03

The city starts moving

Its status as the only World Athletics-certified 42-kilometre street race in Colombia, plus recognised Boston Marathon qualifying status, sets it apart from the many shorter city runs held elsewhere in the country
