National Gaita Festival in Ovejas

National Gaita Festival in Ovejas, Sucre, is named for Francisco Llirene, a locally renowned alegre drum player, and has run since 1985 as Colombia's first festival built specifically around gaita music. Competitions cover long and short gaita, unpublished compositions, decimero verse recitation and dancing couples, held each October around the feast of Ovejas' patron saint, Saint Francis of Assisi.
