The story

Caribbean International Theater Festival in Santa Marta

First held in 1989 under director Patricia Moreno, Santa Marta's Festicaribe is widely considered the oldest theatre festival in the Caribbean region, having hosted companies from around 24 countries across its history. Run each late August or early September across the city's theatres and public spaces, it blends formal indoor productions with outdoor public performances in a city better known for beach tourism.

Santa Marta's Festival Internacional de Teatro del Caribe held its first edition in 1989 under the direction of Patricia Moreno, five years before its organising body, the Corporacion Festival Internacional de Teatro del Caribe, was formally registered as a private non-profit with Magdalena department and the Santa Marta Chamber of Commerce in July 1994.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Caribbean-region festivals can claim the longevity this one holds, tracing to 1989 and generally cited as the oldest theatre festival in the Caribbean, a distinction that separates it from newer regional performing-arts events

02

The mystery stays covered

Its documented participation from roughly two dozen countries across Latin America, Europe and North America gives it an international breadth unusual for a mid-sized Colombian coastal city rather than a national capital

03

The city starts moving

Some editions' programming ties in Santa Marta's own long civic history, adding a specific local historical dimension not present in generic touring theatre festivals
