The story

National Carranguera Music Festival in Tinjaca

Founded in 2008 by Eduardo Villareal with support from carranga pioneer Jorge Velosa Ruiz, Tinjaca's Convite Cuna Carranguera is Boyaca's dedicated showcase for carranga, the peasant guitar-and-tiple music popularised nationally from the 1970s. Centred on the municipal plaza, it mixes traditional repertoire with newer experimental variations across performances by groups from the roughly 400-strong national carranguero scene.

Carranga, the guitar-and-tiple-driven peasant popular music of Boyaca department, had no dedicated national showcase until 2008, when Eduardo Villareal, a Bogota native drawn to the Boyaca countryside, organised the first Convite Cuna Carranguera in the small municipality of Tinjaca with support from Jorge Velosa Ruiz, the musician most responsible for carranga's national popularity from the 1970s onward.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Before 2008, no festival existed specifically for carranga despite around 400 carranguero groups active nationally, making Tinjaca's event the genre's first dedicated national showcase rather than one stop on a broader folk-festival circuit

02

The mystery stays covered

Its founding partnership with Jorge Velosa Ruiz, the musician most credited with carranga's national popularisation, gives it direct lineage to the genre's own history

03

The city starts moving

Organisers frame carranga explicitly as music in permanent transformation, deliberately programming experimental variations alongside traditional repertoire rather than presenting a fixed, museum-style folk tradition
