Wayuu Culture Festival

First held in 1985 to mark Uribia's fiftieth founding anniversary, this festival is the principal cultural celebration of the Wayuu people, whose territory spans Colombian La Guajira and Venezuela's Zulia state. Declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 2006, it centres on the Wayuunaiki language through music, dance, storytelling, horse races and traditional games over several days in the Guajira desert peninsula.

Uribia, the La Guajira municipality with the highest proportion of Wayuu indigenous residents in Colombia and self-styled as the country's indigenous capital, held the first Festival de la Cultura Wayuu in 1985 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the municipality's founding, an occasion organisers used to promote and share Wayuu cultural expression with the wider public rather than simply mark a civic anniversary.
