The story

Vallenato Legend Festival in Valledupar

Founded in 1968 in Valledupar by composer Rafael Escalona alongside a provincial governor and a future culture minister, the Vallenato Legend Festival stages an accordionist competition across vallenato's four core rhythms, plus piqueria verbal-dueling contests, and is credited with inspiring more than fifty other vallenato festivals nationwide since.

Three men sitting down to design a festival around a regional accordion music and a religious feast day at the same time produced, in 1968, the Vallenato Legend Festival: composer Rafael Escalona, then-Cesar governor Alfonso Lopez Michelsen, and writer and future culture minister Consuelo Araujo combined the idea of honouring vallenato, the accordion-driven genre native to Colombia's northern Atlantic coast, with the existing local devotion to the Virgin of the Rosario, staging the first edition from April 27th to 30th, 1968 in Valledupar's Plaza Alfonso Lopez.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's documented role in consolidating vallenato as a national Colombian cultural emblem, cited specifically in a 2013 Ministry of Culture report, and in spawning more than fifty imitator festivals nationwide, gives Valledupar's edition an originating status few regional music festivals can claim over their genre's other festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

The piqueria contest, an improvised rhymed verbal duel judged alongside musicianship, is a competitive format specific to vallenato culture and not found at accordion or folk-music festivals outside this tradition

03

The city starts moving

UNESCO's 2015 recognition of vallenato itself as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity traces its documentation directly back to this festival's decades of sustained competition
