The story

Villa de Leyva International Jazz Festival in Villa de Leyva

Founded in 2011 by Justo Vicente Cuervo Londono and Paola Vargas Vaca, Villa de Leyva's jazz festival has run annually since, adding an academic component in 2012 to pair young regional musicians with visiting masters. Concerts spanning classic, contemporary and fusion jazz take place in heritage and open-air venues, most visibly the town's vast colonial main plaza.

Villa de Leyva's jazz festival began with the registration of the Corporacion Villa Jazz Festival at the Tunja Chamber of Commerce in 2010, followed by the first edition on 3 July 2011, founded by maestro Justo Vicente Cuervo Londono together with Paola Vargas Vaca.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Jazz performed in an open colonial plaza built in the sixteenth century offers a visual and acoustic setting distinct from the indoor clubs and concert halls where the genre is typically heard in Colombia's larger cities

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's explicit role providing central Andean Colombia, an area with fewer dedicated jazz venues than Bogota or Medellin, with regular access to touring jazz artists gives it a documented regional function beyond simple entertainment

03

The city starts moving

Continuity under family leadership since founder Justo Cuervo Londono's death in 2019, with his son assuming the corporation's presidency, reflects an unusually direct succession story for a mid-sized regional festival
