International Joropo Tournament in Villavicencio
International Joropo Tournament is Villavicencio's competitive showcase for Llanero plains culture, founded around 1960 to 1962 and centered on the joropodromo, where more than two thousand couples dance joropo together along the city's main avenues. Interpreters, composers and dancers of traditional Llanero music compete, drawing crowds estimated above two hundred thousand from Colombia and neighboring Venezuela.
International Joropo Tournament grew out of a 1962 song competition organized by musician Miguel Angel Martin, created to showcase Colombia's musical diversity in the newly established department of Meta, though some sources place its true first celebration in 1960, the year Meta itself was founded.
